I was wondering about the function of the peak in mountain bike helmets. What's its purpose? And also, how safe is it? Because it's made of thin plastic that I image can break in a crash and cut you face/eyes.

I use mine to keep the sun out of my eyes, much the same way as any other hat with a peak

Normally they're fairly detachable, and if you've crashed on your face the visor is the last of your worries!

If it's just because of the sun why don't road cycling helmets have them? Well, if I crash on my face and the helmet has been designed and tested to absorb the shock but then there's a plastic bit in front of it that may break and make things worse, than I'm worried. Any experiences?
I know it's detachable, I've taken mine off but I was trying to find out if it's worth to use it or not...

It appears to me that it became more of a fashion thing...

I'd be worried if i saw you cycling with your helmet on your face,
your face might be o.k in a crash, but your head would be a tad tender..

Laybacking hurts less than jamming until you fall off.

Because road cyclists tend to be in a face down bums in the air position (am I sterotyping here) to maximise their aerodynamic profile and gain maximum speed. So sun in the eyes is less of a problem. Mountain biking you're in a more upright position and sunn in the eyes can definitely be a problem the peak helps with. If you don't like the peak just remove it - they can easily be removed and re-attached at a later date.

I took mine off, found it a bit distracting...
