Hi. Our welcome page gives you a general introduction to the Hertfordshire Mountaineering Club - who we are, what we do, etc. Next you might like to have a look at our events page to see where we're going in the next few months.

So who are the HMC?

As the name implies, we are an active & friendly mountaineering club, based in Hertfordshire, England. Our members take part in a wide variety of activities, including Climbing, Scrambling, Walking, Mountain Biking, Canoeing (one certified member), Skiing and the occasional drinking.

Where do we meet?

Most Tuesday evenings will find us in the Sun Inn, Lemsford, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, AL8 7TP, England.  grid ref TL 220124 where we meet from 9.30pm onwards.  During the winter, we occasionally hold indoor events, such as lectures and member's slide shows.  These are held in a separate venue, sometimes in the bar of the Long & Short Arm pub in Lemsford, WGC, AL8 7TN, almost opposite the Sun Inn, Lemsford, AL8 7TP.  Click on the map to find us.

Where do we go?

In summer we camp at a wide variety of locations around the country, including Devon & Cornwall, the Gower in S. Wales, Mid & North Wales, the Lakes and Scotland. Huts are also booked in the summer, such as the Don Whillans hut at the Roaches.

Usually we have a summer 'overseas' trip, to Europe, the Alps, Nepal, Canada and America. There are even some ex-members living in the French Alps, Milan, Boulder- Colorado, San Francisco, Canada and South Africa.
For further details, please visit our Events page

Slides & Lectures

As mentioned, in the winter months we occasionally hold slide shows and lectures in Hertfordshire on a Tuesday evening and sometimes at the Herts centre in North Wales. Details of the slide shows and venues are available on the Events page.

Membership details

All new prospective members are very welcome to join us, to come on a few meets, and decide if we have what you want in a mountaineering club.  Details of how to join the HMC, the costs, the constitution and a membership form are all accessible from the Membership page

History of the HMC

The Hertfordshire Mountaineering club was formed in 1958 and has held regular meets since then. The club's purpose is to promote and encourage all aspects of mountaineering in the interests of its members.  However we do not provide any training. For training courses, please see the links page for a link to the BMC web pages.

In 1998 it was the 40th Anniversary of the HMC. To mark the occasion, the Annual Dinner was held in Hertfordshire, on 18th April 1998 at Tewin Village Hall.  Jim Curran was the guest speaker.  For further details of the club see the 40th event, and the Origins pages.

The HMC Committee

The Club has a committee of six, all elected at the AGM in April. Committee members are elected for two years, and after that must stand down for re-election.   The Committee may co-opt up to two club members a year.

The committee consists of the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and three other members, who usually cover Climbing, Indoor events and Outdoor meets.  For further details of the committee and AGM minutes, see the Committee details page.

CRUX - the magazine

The HMC has recently been producing a quarterly (ish) magazine, containing a wide variety of articles from a cross-section of members.  Sometimes this includes forthcoming meets list and committee members contact details.  New articles are always welcome.  The CRUX articles usually cover recent meets and other events of significance. However be warned, some may be of a humorous nature.      For further details of the current & older Crux's, see the  CRUX pages.

Please send mail to the  HMC Secretary   if you have any questions about the club
