Clocks went forward last night so it can mean only one thing. Longer daylight on the hills as summer approaches. Its still worth taking a headtorch if you are planning a long day out though – just in case. Our trip to the Hertfordshire Snowdonia Hut was a great success, with great weather and even better food cooked by our very own Paul and Jane providing a three course meal for the annual dinner. We are now looking forward to our next trips over the coming months including the Easter Glen Coe trip. Before that however, we have the pub social on Tuesday evening.
Its our usual monthly gathering on Tuesday 31 March at the Three Horseshoes starting at 8.30pm. Come along to renew your membership and collect your new HMC membership cards for 2015 and hear all the latest gossip from our last club trips.
Glen Coe is perhaps Scotland’s most famous and most scenic glen. Glen Coe has hillwalking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and skiing. It could be a combination of winter and/or spring conditions at this time of year. Staying at the Glen Coe SYHA accommodation only. Also it is a short walk away from the famous climbers pub, the Clachaig Inn which is well worth one, if not several visits! Booked to arrive Thursday and leave Tuesday; over lapping Easter weekend, so hopefully avoiding Bank Holiday traffic at each end to make a good worthwhile trip. Click here to book on the event.

Our Chairman, Paul Hearn will be hosting a meeting regarding the summer trip to the Dolomites at the Three Horseshoes on Wednesday the 8th April at 8pm. For any HMC members interested in going on the trip, this would be an ideal opportunity to get some further details about the trip and find out more about extensive amount of adventure that awaits anyone heading out to the Dolomites.

Cotswolds St Albans have kindly agreed to host our AGM once more. It will take place on Tuesday 14th April at 7.30pm to which every member is invited to attend. An agenda will be published in due course. I do hope that you can attend.
Demesne Farm, is located in Bellingham, just to the south of Northumberland National Park and a traditional stop on the Pennine Way. The Northumberland National Park covers more than 400 square miles of awe-inspiring landscapes from Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site in the south, to Kielder Water & Forest Park in the west, then northwards to the Cheviot Hills along the Scottish Border. Being the least populated of all the National Parks, we have the clearest air and the cleanest rivers. Criss-crossed by 700 miles of footpaths and rights of way, you can walk, cycle or horse-ride with only the sounds of nature for company.
The campsite boasts 30 all grass pitches of which 13 have 10amp electricity hook-ups. There are clean & modern ladies and gents toilet and hot shower blocks imaginatively developed within one of the traditional stone buildings and surrounded by a quaint cobble yard. Dishwashing facilities and a wide range of local attraction information are situated in the blocks which are located on the outskirts of the working farm buildings.
The campsite is located around 100 metres from the village centre, although you’d never realize it as the place has a tranquility all of its own. This central location means that you are never very far from local shops, pubs, tourist information centres and tea-rooms meaning walkers and cyclists following the Pennine Way or the Reiver Coast to Coast routes have somewhere to fuel up on their doorstep. Dogs are welcome on the site but we would ask all owners to be responsible and in control of their pets at all time.

Come and enjoy some of the best coastal sports climbing in the UK, or if your a walker, enjoy the Jurassic coast and the sea air. Staying at Woodyhyde Campsite, with good facilities and a relaxed atmosphere and a great location for the sea cliffs.

As a demonstration of support for our mountain rescue services in 2015, the HMC is offering the option to make an additional discretionary contribution of £3 as part of the membership renewal which will be given to a nominated mountain rescue charity. The contribution will be entirely optional. If you wish to make a contribution please add £3 to your membership fee.

There are quite a few events coming up over the coming weeks including two HMC trips to Snowdonia and Glen Coe over the Easter break. We have a few places left for the Snowdonia trip so there is plenty of opportunity to book yourself on before this Friday. Don’t forget that those members of the committee who are going will be cooking a great meal on Saturday evening at the hut. The menu is below.
There are a small number of places left for the Scotland trip to Glen Coe which promises to be an excellent Easter trip. If you wish to go, please book your place quickly for this excellent trip. Don’t forget to try the haggis at the Clachaig Inn.
Just a quick note to remind members that if you are booked onto any trips with the HMC, please ensure your membership of the HMC is up to date. Membership fees can be paid in advance of the trip; alternatively you can pay your membership fees to a member of the committee when on an trip. In either case please notify the Club Treasurer and Secretary who will issue you with your HMC membership card.
Our trip to Snowdonia have always been a great way to get inspired by mountain scenery. With so many route choices up to the summit, the mountain caters for all abilities. For a long slow plod, try the route from the SNowdon Ranger. For those with a good head for heights, try Grib Goch. Most conveniently the mountain hut sits at the base of the Watkin path which presents a quieter way to get to the summit than perhaps the more popular Pyg track or miners trail. We are planning to have our regular annual dinner at the Snowdonia Mountain Hut with the annual dinner lovingly prepared by committee members (and any willing volunteers) on the Saturday night. The HMC has been made aware (via one of our members) of a special night being held in aid of charity fund raising that has already raised £150,000. This looks like a great event: 12 different adventurers speaking on one night at a Night Of Adventure in London on March 24th. All the proceeds go to Hope and Homes for Children. The adventures include skiing to the South Pole, paddling through the Congo, walking a lap of Wales with a donkey, motorbiking round the world, sailing round Britain, speedflying in Greenland, and the joys of sleeping on a hill. Dear HMC Members
Our first two events for 2015 have had a full turn out which is excellent considering it is the cold winter months. The Castleton trip in January saw our intrepid HMC members facing full mountain winter conditions as a load of snow was dumped on the Dark Peak a couple of days before. The second day was a walk around the Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs where the Dambusters Squadren uses to practice with Barnes Wallace’s bouncing bomb.
The Lakes trip to the Murt camping barn saw seven would be HMC adventurers sleeping in a fabulous little converted barn in Nether Wasdale. While there was lighting and running water, the heating was a little thin on the ground but at least we all kept warm by going to the local pubs in the evening to be entertained by a horse racing and raffle evening. Our table won three prizes no less. There was a great thaw on the hills over the weekend and much of the ground was wet and boggy but conditions on top of Scafel were still clinging onto the last traces of winter to ensure we didn’t get away to lightly.
